Leo's Spaghetti Bar:
'Famous St Kilda murders' with Robin Bowles. 6.30pm, Theatreworks,
$10
True-crime writer, Robin Bowles, talks about murders — fictional
and real — which took place in Kilda 1880s to the 1990s. Some
still unsolved. One resulted in a person being convicted on astonishing
evidence. The cases include:
• Fergus Hume’s 1886 classic, The Mystery of the
Hansom Cab, where the murder took place on St Kilda Road. This
was the first mystery novel in the world to sell more than 500,000
copies, easily outstripping Sherlock Holmes in popularity.
• The unsolved murder of Molly Dean, a teacher, artist’s
model and aspiring writer who was murdered in 1930 on her way home
from St Kilda Railway Station. A fictionalised account of the murder
appeared in George Johnston’s 1964 classic, My Brother
Jack.
• The (unsolved) murders of St Kilda prostitutes , Amanda
Jane
Barnes* and transsexual Adele Baily & and the (solved) murder
of an Elwood woman Grace Johnson*. (* pseudonyms to protect the
sensitivities of surviving relatives)
